Michael Bay remaking Nightmare on elm street
(in Movies on 2008/01/30)http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/01/30/nightmare_relived/
Transformers director Michael Bay and his partners at the Platinum Dunes production company have been tasked by New Line Cinema to “relaunch” the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise.
Wes Craven’s 1984 slasher classic gave the world the iconic Freddy Krueger, who haunted a total of nine films and two TV series. According to Variety, the new outing will represent a “complete overhaul” of the Nightmare concept.
R or PG-13? They had a pretty elaborate universe going there, hope they don’t shit all over it.

Jailhouse phone-braggart gets max sentence
(in General on 2008/01/24)Laughing jailhouse phone call gets woman tough sentence
Cruikshank said he found a telephone conversation between Arrington and an unknown male friend, a week after L’Ecuyer was killed, to be “breathtaking in its inhumanity.”
During the conversation, the man told Arrington that an acquaintance believed she should get a medal and a parade because she had “taken out” a “tree hugger, a bicyclist, a Frenchman and a gay guy all in one shot.”
Arrington laughed. When the man said he knew it was a terrible thing to say, she responded, “No, it’s not.”
Assistant Public Defender Michael Rosenbluth told the judge his client has never been “cold, callous or flippant” about L’Ecuyer’s death and has always felt remorseful.

Kellogg kills the Hydrox cookie…
(in General on 2008/01/23)Hydrox debuted in 1908, the signature product of the nascent Sunshine Biscuits, and ruled the category until 1912, when National Biscuit (later Nabisco) launched the remarkably similar Oreos. Given Nabisco’s superiority over Sunshine in everything from distribution channels to advertising budgets, it was no contest–Hydrox never had a chance. Over the years, Oreos’ popularity and market hegemony became so overwhelming that the product transcended the consumer realm and came to be viewed as a cultural icon, an American original–even though there was nothing original about it.
The Hydrox Cookie Is Dead, and Fans Won’t Get Over It
Robert Fliegel was craving a Hydrox. The 52-year-old computer consultant says he always liked the way the chocolate sandwich cookie, which he found crisper than Oreos, “stood up to the milk” when dunked.
But Mr. Fliegel, who used to be able to devour an entire package of the crème-filled biscuits in a sitting, couldn’t find them in any stores near his East Stroudsburg, Pa., home.
Only when he went online a few months ago to try to order some did he learn the truth: Hydrox is dead.
In 2003, without warning or announcement, Kellogg Co. killed off the cookie — by then rechristened Droxies — after failing to gain ground against the dominant Oreo, one of the country’s best-selling snack foods.

JWZ on the Connor Chronicles
(in General on 2008/01/23)http://jwz.livejournal.com/834945.html
And I really liked that they used time travel to delete the third movie in its entirety. That was a very, very, very good decision.
JWZ weighing in after the first three episodes of the Connor Chronicles. I’m with him on the big archs and the FBI agent, but I think the mellowed Sarah Connor is kind of lame.

PayDay loans and the military
(in General on 2008/01/21)Payday Lenders Can’t Afford To Lend You Money At Only 36%

Although they might have a point:
At 36% APR, the total fee charged on a $100, two-week advance would be $1.38. We cannot cover the cost of originating the a loan, let alone meet employee payroll and benefits and other fixed business expenses, at this rate.
