DST changes result in false imprisonment
(in General on 2007/04/17)Daylight Savings Time Puts Kid in Jail for 12 Days
Cody Webb was jailed for calling in a bomb threat to his Hempstead Area high school (near Pittsburgh). He spent 12 days in lockup until the authorities realized that their caller-id log was off an hour because of the new Daylight Savings Time rules and that Cody had only called one hour prior to the actual bomb threat. Perhaps it took so long because of the principal’s Catch-22 attitude about Cody’s guilt — she said, ‘Well, why should we believe you? You’re a criminal. Criminals lie all the time.’”

simple vim code formatting
(in Computing on 2007/04/13)if you have an unruly block of code in vim, you can reformat it with the following:
- Move cursor to the start of the block you care about (usually an opening paren)
- Hit ‘v’ to go into visual mode
- Use your favorite vim technique to get to the end of the block — ‘%’ will take you to the closing paren, or ‘/regex’, or just page down with arrows or ‘j’ key
- hit two equal signs as in ‘==’
Instead of reformatting, you can apply a find/replace regex to the same block selection by hitting the ‘:’ followed immedaitely by the ’s’ operator. The selection has automatically setup the scope of the change you want, so don’t add line number or prefix with ‘%’ as you might be used to.
