Boy charged with theft by parents beaten to death on way to prison
(in General on 2006/08/26)http://tvnz.co.nz/view/page/423466/821545
Ashley was found badly beaten in the back of a Chubb Security van on Thursday night. Although he was revived by paramedics at the scene, he died on Friday.
Ashley’s family say his parents wanted to teach him a lesson about the consequences of breaking the law. He had taken his mother’s car without permission so they had him charged him with theft.
On Thursday Ashley appeared at the North Shore District Court. The judge offered him bail but his parents chose to send him to prison as a deterrent.
But on the trip to Auckland Central Remand prison, he was believed to have been strangled and assaulted by two others in the van.
Ashley’s family have issued a statement listing 10 questions they want answered, such as why was a 17-year-old with no history of serious crime or violence was transported unattended with more serious offenders?

NYT on Duke Lacrosse Rape
(in General on 2006/08/25)The sergeant’s notes are drawing intense scrutiny from defense lawyers both because they appear to strengthen Mr. Nifong’s case and because they were not turned over by the prosecution until after the defense had made much of the gaps in the earlier evidence.
Joseph B. Cheshire, a lawyer for David Evans, one of the defendants, called Sergeant Gottlieb’s report a “make-up document.” He said Sergeant Gottlieb had told defense lawyers that he took few handwritten notes, relying instead on his memory and other officers’ notes to write entries in his chronological report of the investigation.
Mr. Cheshire said the sergeant’s report was “transparently written to try to make up for holes in the prosecution’s case.” He added, “It smacks of almost desperation.”

Dutch flight that was escorted back to airport

‘Unsophisticated’ passengers with cell phones cause terror scare
welve passengers, reportedly of “south Asian appearance,” were arrested upon return to Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport and questioned by authorities after the pilot of Northwest Flight 0042 notified authorities over German airspace.
“It does not appear that this is terrorism related,” said Dutch Justice Minister Piet Hein Donner in the Hague, speaking to reporters. The 12 passengers remained in custody for further questioning overnight but were released today. By Dutch law, they can be detained for up to three days without formal charges.
Indian press are reporting that the suspects are Indian-born Muslims. Some accounts said the men were speaking Urdu, sported beards and dressed in shalwar kameez.
By a remarkable coincidence, Tim Nelson, who had tipped the FBI about Zacarias Moussaoui’s behavior at a Minnesota flight school in 2001, was on board the Northwest flight.
He was quoted as saying that it was unclear on-board whether “it was just a misunderstanding, where you had unsophisticated people flying” or an actual terror-related incident.

Penis Pump Contraband
(in General on 2006/08/23)http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060823/ap_on_fe_st/penis_pump_threat_1
Cook County prosecutors say a 29-year-old man traveling with his mother desperately didn’t want her to know he’d packed a sexual aid for their trip to Turkey. So he told security it was a bomb, officials said.
Madin Azad Amin was stopped by officials on Aug. 16 after guards found an object in his baggage that resembled a grenade, prosecutors said.
When officers asked him to identify it, Amin said it was a bomb, said Cook County Assistant State’s Attorney Lorraine Scaduto.
He later told officials he’d lied about the item because his mother was nearby and he didn’t want her to hear that it was part of a penis pump, Scaduto said.
