Nixon quotes
(in General on 2006/03/26)Well, when the President does it, that means that it is not illegal.
Nixon: I still think we ought to take the [North Vietnamese] dikes out now. Will that drown people
Kissinger: About two hundred thousand people.
Nixon: No, no, no, I’d rather use the nuclear bomb. Have you got that, Henry?
Kissinger: That, I think, would just be too much.
Nixon: The nuclear bomb, does that bother you?…I just want you to think big, Henry, for Christsakes.

2.6.16 and acpi_cpufreq
(in ComputingGeneral on 2006/03/26)
if you think cpufreq is broken in 2.6.16, you were probably loading acpi_cpufreq instead of one of the speedstep-* drivers.
2.6.16 included a change that prevents acpi_cpufreq from loading when a more appropriate module (speedstep-centrino) exists.
And by you I mean me.

Windows package management, and more
(in ComputingGeneral on 2006/03/26)
Altris SVS encapsulates windows software installation into some metadata, and allows you to install/activate/deactivate software from a litle control panel app.
Registry changes never hit your real registry, they are redirected to an SVS-manged pseudo-registry.
All filesystem activity from the SVS-managed application is tracked and can be rolled back as well. Install paint.NET and create a png on your desktop, disable the paint.NET “layer”, and the file’s gone.
The easier software installation/rollout aside, the benefits of running something like IE or kazaa in a layer of its own should be clear.

Pageing Orson Scott Card
(in General on 2006/03/25)Nasa researchers are working on a way to get speech support without talking. Using subvocalization sensors that measure neuro-electric signals, they are developing communication protocols that will be useful in situations where normal speech might be hard to accomplish.

Before the wiki…
(in General on 2006/03/25)Before every conceivable piece of information was haphazardly added as a single page to its own distinct wiki, there was Everything2
Wikipedia entry for Everything2
One of the cooler things about E2 is the bizarre web of vaguely related topics you can find yourself downardly spiralling into, by following “related” links.
