VNC won’t use some window managers, others exit

(in General on 2006/02/25)

In your ~/.vnc/xstartup, unset SESSION_MANAGER environment variable.

In the VNC session, I found that icewm in VNC would exit when I closed my normal graphical logon, and xfce4 would refuse to start — not cool!

Ultraviolet

(in General on 2006/02/24)

As pointed out by Ryan, the writer/directory of Ultraviolet is also the writer/director of the Christian Bale asskicking-fest Equilibrium!

Marjorie, the eternal hater, points out the he once did a movie Called Double Trouble, starring Peter and David Paul — the big bodybuilders from one of my favorite movies Think Big.

Geniuses

Whoever citibank hired to make sure none of the fridge magnets could be assembled into suggestive phrases sure has me spanked.

I struck out just like Brent Blood did.

Police Math test is discriminatory

(in General on 2006/02/22)

http://home.hamptonroads.com/stories/story.cfm?story=99269&ran=225267

The city has reviewed the recruiting selection process and made several changes to address the pass-fail rate on the written exam, including adding 10 minutes to the math section and providing a study guide to all applicants.

Which sounds more reasonable:

  1. Cops should have to have to be able to prove they can do High School mathematics
  2. Some racist Commisioner Gordon type, having discovered black cryptonite, toils in his underground lair devising word problems to keep black people off the police force

Condie vs. Colin

(in General on 2006/02/22)

Overheard on Fox News this morning and almost dribbled some Food-Lion brand oatmeal:

Condie Rice has the same problem as her predecessor [Colin Powell]…

See what they’re doing there?

They’re both weak on domestic affairs

As Norm would say…. “Well that and the other thing…, but [domestic affairs] hurts second most!”

Date Movie: Abomination

(in General on 2006/02/21)

Date Movie was so horrifically bad… there really wasn’t a nugget of gold in the entire thing — Every single gag fell right on its face.

Good thing Ultraviolet is going to deliver!

Lost Camera almost un-lost

(in General on 2006/02/19)

camera unlost, but not quite found.

“Hello,” I said, when I reached the woman who had reported the camera found, “I got your number from the park ranger, it seems you have my camera?”

We discussed the specifics of the camera, the brown pouch it was in, the spare battery and memory card, the yellow rubberband around the camera. It was clear it was my camera, and I was thrilled.

“Well,” she said, “we have a bit of a situation. You see, my nine year old son found your camera, and we wanted to show him to do the right thing, so we called, but now he’s been using it for a week and he really loves it and we can’t bear to take it from him.”
