BISHKEK. March 24 (Interfax) – Sources in Bishkek told Interfax that Kyrgyz President Askar Akayev, his family and his closest associates left Bishkek aboard a presidential helicopter on Thursday and headed for the border of Kazakhstan.
An unconfirmed report said the helicopter landed on Kazakh territory.
Earlier, Kazakh Foreign Ministry spokesman Ilyas Omarov told Interfax the ministry possessed no evidence that Akayev was on his way to Kazakhstan.
Akayev left the government headquarters in central Bishkek shortly before the building was seized on Thursday by the opposition. It was announced that the president had left for talks with the head of the Organization for Security and Cooperation mission to Kyrgyzstan.
